Dorchester Days
Published in Hardcover by Phaidon Press Inc. (November, 2000)
Author: Eugene Richards
Average review score:

A Photo Documentary Classic Reissued
Eugene Richards is arguably America's greatest living social documentary photographer, and "Dorchester Days" is his photographic portrait of the blue collar Boston neighborhood in which he came of age.

Originally self-published and printed on a press intended for canning lables, this Phaidon reissue and update of this classic does real justice to Richard's stunning in-your-face documentary style. In addition to including all the original photos and text, this new addition includes photos Richards made of the racial strife in nearby South Boston in the 1970s, as well as additional text, most of it reproduced in Richard's handwriting.

Gene Richards is, sadly, one of a dwindling if-not-dying breed of documentary photographer, whose lives and work are dedicated to telling the stories of the voiceless. A former Vista volunteer and Civil Rights worker, Richards continues to expend his greatest photographic effort to doing good by doing art. And for that reason - even if he wasn't the W. Eugene Smith of our era - this multiple-time Magazine Photographer of the Year deserves the support of anyone seriously interested in photography, or in the lives of the people respectfully examined in his work.

Drivers at the Short-Time Motel (The National Poetry Series)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (05 June, 2000)
Author: Eugene Gloria
Average review score:

Great Words from A Promising New Talent
This was a challenging book of poems to read. It maps out an intelligent and complex world--the bicultural experience. Nostalgic and unidealistic, here is a Filipino-American voice struggling through the painful, always important memories attached to contrasting landscapes--those of the U.S. and the Philippines. My favorite poems were those that dealt with the speaker's immediate family. And though the language is beautiful in many of the poems, what really strikes hard is the honesty with which speaker tells his (and his family's) stories.

Also recommend: Nick Carbo's SECRET ASIAN MAN and Bino Realuyo's THE UMBRELLA COUNTRY.

Classic cardiovascular drugs book
This is a classic of cardiovascular medicine. In its newest edition Opie's book is excellent in many ways: first, it is a small book, almost a pocket-book, and loaded with concise yet precise infformation. It is the kind of book you can put in your black bag and you can belive it will be valuable anywhere, from the ICU to the ambulatory. There are many excellent chapters on drugs, all of them with an solid pharmacological basis, each chapter is an great review of the subject. But the best of this book is that it is very practical: it goes straight to the problems more commonly found in the cardiology office or in the ICU, with the big advantage of being small and portable. An must-have book for physicians intrested in cardiology and in cardiovascular drugs pharmacology, also excellent for residents. Hope we have an new edition of this great book soon!

A superbly presented treatise
In The Eclectic Odyssey Of Atlee B. Ayres, Architect, Robert Coote (professor emeritus of architecture at the University of Texas, Austin) informatively surveys thirty years of the architectural career of Atlee Ayres, focusing on Ayres' residential architecture in the San Antonio suburbs of Monte Vista, Olmos Park, and Terrell-Hills. It is in these architectural designs that Ayres' eclecticism is most apparent. Coote studies twenty-five of Ayres' houses in detail including their plans, spaces, exteriors, materials, and structure. Additionally, Coote describes Ayres' architectural education, travels, and career highlights. Highly recommended for professional and academic architectural reference collections, The Eclectic Odyssey Of Atlee B. Ecological Vignettes: Ecological Approaches to Dealing with Human Predicaments
Published in Hardcover by Taylor & Francis (October, 1998)
Author: Eugene P. Odum
Average review score:

A book for general readers by a foremost academic ecologist
Dr. Odum, well-known for years in Georgia for his support of sensible social policies as well as his research and teaching of the scientific discipline of ecology at University of Georgia, has now written a book for the non-scientific layman extrapolating certain concepts from ecology and biology into broader human realms. A few chapter titles give the flavor of the book very well...'What we learn from Ecology about Growth'...'Money is a very incomplete measure of wealth'...'When to confront and when to cooperate.'

Ecology: A Bridge Between Science and Society
Published in Paperback by Sinauer Associates, Inc. (March, 1997)
Author: Eugene Pleasants Odum
Average review score:

Quite the best ecology text.
Eugene Odum was the first person to put together plant and animal ecology in a satisfying synthesis, in his Fundamentals of Ecology of 1953.That could have remained the prime textbook for the past five decades, but he eventually tired of producing new editions. Also, he was keen to reach a wider audience, and this is the latest version of the more accessible book that he wrote for the general reader. Two things in particular make the book special. First, Odum focuses on the whole living planet, working down to the level of the individual organisms and populations; most ecology textbooks work from the bottom up, giving a fragmentary view of the overall situation. Second, Odum is almost alone among ecologists in integrating humans completely into his account. The result is a clear and readable book with an urgent and important message for all of us who share the earth.

Edition of One: The Autobiography of Eugene B. Power, Founder of University Microfilms
Published in Hardcover by Umi Research Pr (May, 1990)
Author: Eugene B. Power
Average review score:

The life story of a visionary and a pioneer
Eugene Power has impacted the information age tremendously. As a pioneer in "low tech" microfilm production he was the first to make mass information archiving and aggregation possible. His accomplishments and his company will continue to impact the information economy and the distribution of information (power) for many years to come. This pragmatic autobiography tells the story of a man ahead of his time and serves as a testament to the omnipotence of persistence and determination. Valuable knowledge for anyone interested in economic history and the transition from the industrial to the information age.
